| The WADHURST PROBUS CLUB started in 1992. WHAT IS PROBUS? An association of retired and semi-retired men who join together in autonomous clubs throughout the UK and the world. The word PROBUS is an abbreviation of the words PROfessional and BUSiness, which embraces any person who has had some measure of responsibility in the fields of commerce, industry, education etc. The basic purpose of a Probus club is to provide regular gatherings of people, who, in their retirement, appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and similar levels of interest. THE EMPHASIS OF PROBUS CLUBS is for a Probus club to be: Simple in structure, Involve members in minimum costs, Free from constraints and obligations, Directed primarily to provide friendship with the opportunity for development and aquaintance, Made up of members who are compatible with each other. One day, in 1965, the Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City decided to initiate a project on behalf of the retired and semi-retired folks of their community. They had an idea of a luncheon club as an alternative to the old folks clubs. The first name for such a club was the "Campus Club". In Caterham, a similar club started named Probus. It took two to three years for the initial idea to flourish and take off. Rotary has since then adopted the approach of enabling the organisation to start and then leave it to its own devices.
